Coniopterygidae

Dustywings

The Coniopterygidae is generally a very homogeneous family characterize d by very small adults (forewing length 2-5 mm) with bodies covered by white waxy (“dusty”) secretions. The secretions originate from hypodermal wax glands on the sternites and tergites of the abdomen and are spread over the body by the hindlegs. Other than in the coniopterygids, such glands are only found in the homopteransAleurodina and Coccina. This similarity represents a remarkable example of convergent evolution especially because coni-opterygids frequently are associated with these waxy homopterans.

Many species of coniopterygids are considered to be important natural biological control agents but unfortunately, their role has not been evaluated and their potential remains unknown.
